Here in Australia, we celebrate Father’s Day on the first Sunday in September. But the
tradition actually began in the US, back in the early 1900s.
After Anna Jarvis kickstarted Mother’s Day a few years earlier, a woman in Spokane,
Washington decided dads needed their own day too. Her name was Sonora Smart Dodd, and
her own dad had raised herself and her five brothers solo after their mother’s death.
She, quite rightfully, thought an achievement like that deserved a bit of a shout out,
so she reached out to the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and, in 1910, they started doing
Father’s Day sermons on the third Sunday in June.
Father’s Day took a hot minute to catch on, because of some lame old-fashioned idea about
how men didn’t need a special day and how sentiment is for girls, but luckily society
pushed past that, and now it’s celebrated all around the world.
We don’t know exactly why Australia’s day wound up in September, but the general
consensus is that it spaced the various holidays out a bit better, so spending could be
spread out across the year. It’s not quite as sweet as America’s date, which is close to
Sonora’s dad’s birthday, but it’s a rather practical solution – and that, in its own
way, makes it perfect for Father’s Day!
